Pacific Bluefin Tuna Sells for Historic Price of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets domestically and abroad.
"The first tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the business owner, a familiar figure at the annual January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Past
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price soared before you knew it."
This new purchase tops his own record purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record yet again.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically characterized by exceptionally high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was promptly processed for diners at the bidder's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction was finished.
"I sense like I've started the year in a positive way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," shared one elated diner.
