Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the early names under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after the squad's ten-game winless beginning to the Premier League season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous links to the club - are among the options to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would create a potential obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton Town manager - who made over a century of games for the club during his playing career - is considered a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves board as they start the process of hiring a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising choice considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
