‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s journey from gurney to success with Athletic Bilbao
Whenhe first time Gorka Guruzeta competed in England, an young appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. The second time he played in British turf, against Sunderland two months later, he netted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, well, he did it once more. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he scored again. An excellent finish, as well. “In fact,” he states, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the attacker admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the second half: I was without a signed agreement, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, it’s typical. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the typical thing. I’m not certain how true it was, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At Lezama, the city, the day’s first practice is about to start; post-session, the brief trip to Loiu airport and a further journey to England, now to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Uttering the name lights him up. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, partially owing to the demands of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in European competition. However, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, prevented from reaching a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river surrounded by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are unique and making their first appearance in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he says.
He considered it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. Born to the ex-La Real star the former professional and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of their lives.
“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the top level but each step you progress through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and I tear my cruciate.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as something positive because it forced me to alter the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then go home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved in tears in 2020, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, recall is possible. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
